While times have changed and technology is exploding, we still think of the municipal court as "the People's Court." Please take some time and view our site. We hope that after doing so many of your questions will be answered. We hope you find the Reno Municipal Court website interesting as well as informative. Remember, this is a work in progress and we welcome your comments and suggestions.
The Reno Municipal Court was established by charter in 1966 by the State Legislature. We are a high-volume, limited jurisdiction court of record which adjudicates criminal misdemeanor (e.g., domestic violence, DUI, drug paraphernalia and petty theft) and traffic violations committed by adults within the City of Reno proper. We are a non-jury court with bench trials only. Misdemeanor offenses committed within the county limits are handled by the local Justice Courts as are all gross misdemeanors and felonies.

Proceedings
The following proceedings in the Court are conducted by four elected judges and their staff.
ArraignmentsProceedings in which a defendant is advised of his/her rights, questioned to ensure understanding of those rights, and enters a plea to the charges. The Court holds arraignments six days per week. Jailed defendants are arraigned via closed-circuit video eliminating the need to transport them to the Court. Out-of-custody arraignments are held on-site five days per week in two sessions per day. These arraignments are for those posting bail or bond at the jail, those released on their own recognizance (OR), and those cited rather than arrested. TrialsWhen a defendant pleads not guilty to charges, he/she will be scheduled for trial in the Court. Trials in the Court are without a jury. Legal representation is provided by contract attorneys for indigent defendants if necessary. SentencingUpon being found guilty or entering a plea of guilty, either at arraignment or trial, the defendant will be required to comply with certain Court orders including jail time, fines, diversion programs, community service, or some alternative to jail time. Compliance with sentences is monitored by Court personnel and warrants are issued for defendants found in non-compliance. When fines are imposed, the Judicial Enforcement Unit monitors payment contracts that may be established between the defendant and the Court. Administrative SupportSupport for court proceedings consists of fine collection; enforcement of court orders; warrant service; information technology implementation; interpreting services; courthouse security; maintenance, reporting and distribution of Court records; and courtroom assistance.
