The Regional Sex Offender Notification Unit releases information pursuant to the Community Notification Statute (NRS 179D), which requires law enforcement agencies to inform the public of sex offenders who have been paroled, discharged, or who reside in the community. This notification is not intended to increase fear; rather, it is our belief that an informed public is a safer public.

Sex offenders are classified into one of three risk areas, which are also used to determine the extent of community notification:

1. Tier 1 (Low Risk) is an offender who is assessed as posing a possible risk of recidivism and threat to public safety. Notification is made only to law enforcement agencies.
   
   
2. Tier 2 (Moderate Risk) is an offender who is assessed as posing a probable risk of recidivism and threat to public safety. Notification is made to law enforcement and organizations that are reasonably likely to encounter the sex offender. These include school districts, camps, day care centers, youth organizations or other qualifying religious or community organizations. If the victim is less than 18 years of age, notifications will also be provided to motion picture theaters and businesses reasonably likely to encounter the offender and which primarily have children as customers or conduct events that are attended primarily by children.
   
   
3. Tier 3 (High Risk) is an offender who is assessed as posing a substantial risk of recidivism and threat to public safety. In addition to notifications provided under Tier One and Tier Two above, notifications are made to individual community members who are reasonably likely to encounter the offender.
